A faster close comes from resolving incomplete operational records throughout the month. The final checklist should confirm completeness, reconcile balances and preserve evidence for the judgments made.
Finish the operational cut-off
Confirm that sales, receipts, purchases, goods receipts, expenses, returns and payroll inputs belong to the correct period. Identify documents still in draft or approval and decide whether they must be completed or carried forward.
Review stock movements around the cut-off date where physical receipt and document dates differ.
Reconcile control accounts
Compare receivables and payables summaries with their general-ledger control balances. Reconcile bank activity, cash accounts, tax balances and inventory values using the detailed records behind each total.
- Investigate unmatched or duplicated entries.
- Review old outstanding customer and vendor balances.
- Document accruals, provisions and manual journals with approval evidence.
Lock learning into the next cycle
Record each close task, owner, due date and completion evidence. After review, identify repeated late inputs or reconciliations and improve the upstream workflow rather than accepting the same delay next month.
Have your accountant or tax adviser confirm statutory treatments, filing obligations and period-locking policy for your organisation.
